sweet and sour sloppy joes with sesame slaw

i love a recipe where sweet, salty and spicy come together and make my mouth and my taste buds happy, happy, happy.

this recipe is from real simple mag and the only thing i changed was that i felt like it would benefit from a little hit of heat so i added a couple squirts of sriracha to the beef.  this way, you get some sweet from the brown sugar, salty from the soy sauce, spicy from the rooster sauce and ginger and crunchy goodness from the slaw.

your mouth is gonna be so happy!

sweet and sour sloppy joes with sesame slaw

2T canola oil
1 bunch scallions, chopped
1T fresh grated ginger
1 lb ground beef
1/4 c low sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup tomato paste
couple squirts sriracha
3T brown sugar
salt + pepper
1/2 small head shredded cabbage
2 carrots, grated
1/2 c fresh cilantro leaves
1/4 c fresh lime juice
2 t toasted sesame oil
4 whole wheat hamburger buns

heat 1T of the oil in large skillet over med hi heat. add the scallions and ginger and cook, tossing, until softened, 2-4 minutes. add beef and cook, breaking up with a spoon, until browned, about 7-9 minutes. add soy sauce, tomato paste, sugar, water, sriracha, salt and pepper and cook, stirring, until slightly thickened, about 1 minute more.

toss together the cabbage, carrots, cilantro, lime juice, sesame oil,the remaining T of canola oil, and 1/4 t each s+p  in a large bowl and let sit 10 minutes.

fill the buns with the meat and top with lots of the crunchy slaw.
